August 26, 2017Introduction
HVAC systems are used in automobile to control the flow and temperatures inside the vehicle. Passenger comfort parameters like velocity, temperature & humidity are very important & it need to be maintained within a particular operating range. CFD helps to understand distribution of various comfort parameters within vehicle. CFD offers a safe, reliable and cost + time saving solution.
Challenges
- Capturing all geometrical details of Bus & volume mesh creation for big system.
- Application of various heat loads in CFD simulation.
- Compare performance results with provide design improvement recommendations.
The Solution
All geometrical components which are affecting the flow physics are identified & captured during meshing. Hybrid meshing approach is used in order to keep mesh count in limit without compromising to accuracy of results. CFD analysis of Bus is conducted for determining the flow profile within vehicle & checked whether the Bus environment is within Human comfort zone limits or not (As per ASHRAE). At many critical locations occupied by Manikins, the temperature & velocity was far from the comfort zone limits. Change in diffuser locations & cold air flow parameters are suggested for improving the environmental conditions inside Bus. CFD helped in identifying the performance of initial design of Bus HVAC system.
Benefits
- Prediction of thermal comfort inside Bus subjected to various heat loads.
- Recommendations on improving the thermal environment inside Bus.
- Cost effective solution for reduced number of trials.
